Linda is a Personal Trainer at UT – Division of Recreational Sports and a Professor at Huston Tillotson University where she enjoys working with students and assisting them in reaching their academic pursuits.
Linda ran track in high school and continued to run in her adult years, but never really considered herself a runner until joining Austin Fit. She started running marathons in 2005 and has now run about 15 marathons and11 half marathons.

Jeff started running in high school and continued during his college years at UT Austin. While at UT, he got to where he ran the Longhorn Dam loop (MoPac to Longhorn Dam and back) three times a week. It was during that time that he set the goal to “someday” run a marathon. When Jeff went off to law school in Des Moines, Iowa for three years, he stopped running for a while. “With all the ice and snow, I found it very hard to run outside for several months of the year and I despise running long distances indoors or on a track.”
Upon his return to Austin, he slowly got back into running and ultimately stumbled upon an advertisement for Austin Fit. Remembering his goal to run a marathon, he signed up. At registration, he could not even complete the 2-mile pace run. But 26 weeks later, he completed his first marathon. Because of how this experience changed his life, he decided to become a marathon coach and he since has dedicated himself to helping others attain the same goal. He has been a coach, head coach, and organizer/director for Austin Fit, and he has been an assistant coach and head coach for Team In Training. Jeff has since run 39 total marathons plus two ultra marathons, along with many half marathons and 10K’s and 5K’s.
Running is a big stress reliever for Jeff and provides a diversion from the hectic pace of life as an attorney in Austin.

- Favorite Race: Napa Valley Half, Run For the Water, Boston Marathon
- Goal: Help get you to the start line of your first marathon and share a lot of stories along the way.
My start in running came from a promise that I made to my grandfather. In August of 1976 my grandfather was dealing with terminal lung cancer. I was spending as much time with my grandfather that summer as possible. On my last visit with my grandfather it just happened to coincide with the 1976 Olympics. My grandfather was not get around very well so we spent our time watched the Olympics on TV together. Of all the events during the Olympics there was one that captured our attention and excitement more than all others — the marathon.
There was a lot of hype that year around one of the runners representing the United States in the marathon, Frank Shorter. Frank had won gold in the previous Olympics held in Munich, Germany and there was a lot of hope that Frank could win again on North American soil. After all the hype surrounding the marathon we were both really looking forward to watching the marathon, and what a race it would be. We got up early to see the start of the race. Frank was running in the lead pack from the start of the race. It looked like he was running the race of his life and was well on his way to becoming a back-to-back two-time winner of the marathon. His lead was so large there was no way anyone could catch him. Then, out of nowhere, the East German runner Waldemar Cierpinski had chased down Frank. At mile 23 Waldemar pulled away and passed Frank. Waldemar would go on to set a new Olympic record to win the gold medal. It was the most amazing race I had ever seen.
At that moment I wanted to be like those marathon runners. Even though Frank ended in second, he was my hero. At the end of the race, I looked at my grandfather and said to him, “Grandpa, some day I am going to run that race.” My grandfather looked at me, smiled, and said, “You will do remarkable things in your time.”
Two weeks after I had made that promise to my grandfather he passed away from lung cancer. After his passing, I would feel the weight of my promise every time I would go for a run. I knew that someday I had to run that marathon for my grandfather, I had to fulfill the promise. At the time, there was only one marathon in the country that was recognized and talked about — the Boston Marathon. So I grew up dreaming that someday I would be running the Boston Marathon for my grandfather, fulfilling that promise I had made. As a kid, I would follow the Boston Marathon and read all about it, I would dream of running for my grandfather. As I got older, life happened, you go to school, you start a family, you start a career, some dreams fade away, and some become near impossible. I never let go of my dream of running the Boston Marathon for my grandfather but it did at times feel like the impossible dream. On May 13th, 2021, I received the call I had dreamed of my whole life, I was asked to be part of the 2021, 125th running of the Boston Marathon. On October 11th, 2021 I lived my dream and fulfilled my promise to my grandfather, I ran the race of my life, and completed my 11th marathon running the most storied marathon of them all, the Boston Marathon. To make this moment even more special I ran the race with my 78-year-old mother. My amazing mother, Karen Ostlund, has run more than 100 marathons and the Boston Marathon has always been her dream marathon also.
After living my dream of running the Boston Marathon I had decided not to do another marathon but instead help all those who want to live their own marathon dream get to the start line. I have 12 years of distance running experience with 11 full marathons and 65 half marathons. What I love most about running these days is getting up early and seeing the world before everyone else. The marathon will change you, the person that crosses the finish line is not he same person who started the journey. I can get you to the start line…but the rest is up to you.

Half Marathon (Orange Group – 11:00 to 11:29 Pace)

Fun Facts:
- Years running: 11
- Years running with Austin Fit: 8 (coached 2017-2019)
- Number of Marathons: 6 (Tulsa, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Austin (2))
- Number of Half Marathons: 5 (Austin (3), San Antonio (1) and Chicago (1))
- Favorite Race: Chicago Spring Half Marathon (ran with my daughter in 2025)
- Favorite Distance: half marathon
- Goals: To meet interesting and fun people through Austin Fit and help them reach their fitness goals (I enjoy the training at Austin Fit even more than the races)
I started running in 2013 when my trainer signed me up for the Austin 3M half marathon (without asking!). Although I was a nationally ranked swimmer and played water polo in college, running never came naturally to me. Barely finishing that first half marathon made me realize that I needed specialized training. A friend of mine who trained with Austin Fit for many years suggested that I try the program. Her prompting changed my life. More than a stress reliever or outlet to my busy career, I’ve met so many wonderful people and developed lasting friendships through Austin Fit. Consequently, I always look forward to going downtown and catching up with my friends at Austin Fit despite the (early) start time. The accomplishment of completing a marathon or half marathon is great too, but it’s the weekly runs on Saturdays that I like best. I even convinced my daughter to join and train with Coach Jeff in Summer 2024 (she finished her first half marathon in Spring 2025). Now that I’m coaching again, I look forward to helping you reach your goals, discover more of our beautiful city, and have fun along the way!

My coaches told me they could get me through a Marathon, I couldn’t imagine it. I marathoned within a year, after 2 more I became a USA Fit certified Marathon Coach. I have coached the Full Marathon Groups for over 10 seasons. I’ve ran 22 Marathons and over 200 Half Marathon or longer distances. My passions are my family, starting Businesses, traveling, flying airplanes, Sailing boats. To keep grounded I Run, go to the ranch and keep my vegetable Garden. I am a native Austinite and doing my part to keep the city weird. I ran in my 20’s and 30’s and on and off over the years but primarily did gym classes and HIIT more recently. I slipped into couch potato mode and am trying to get some of the fitness back. My friend Nancy encouraged me to sign up for the Austin Fit walking program the Spring of 2024 and I started the Austin Fit Trail program that summer, and Coach Linda has been challenging me to return to fitness ever since. I now try to run intervals when I can. I am amazed at the diversity of dedicated movers in Austin Fit. Sure, I am naturally a night owl but I find the accountability of meeting a group of people to exercise with and beating the crowds and heat invaluable. It’s never too late to start moving, one step at a time.
